Martin Gough recognised with UKHTC Lifetime Contribution Award

CALGAVIN is proud to celebrate the recognition of its founder and Managing Director, Martin Gough, who has been presented with the UK Heat Transfer Society (UKHTC) Lifetime Contribution Award.

For Martin, the award came as a genuine surprise.

When he received the news, he admitted that he was deeply moved. He had never imagined that the work he had spent his career pursuing would be recognised in this way. His first thoughts, however, were not about himself. He was quick to acknowledge the contribution of his family and the many people who have worked alongside him throughout CALGAVIN’s journey.

“It’s not just me; it’s all the staff as well. I’m a part of this.”

That sense of collaboration has been a defining feature of Martin’s career.

From curiosity to innovation

Martin founded CALGAVIN in 1980 with a clear ambition: to research and develop solutions to improve the performance of tubular heat exchangers and reactors.

His interest in heat transfer began much earlier, influenced by his father-in-law, Professor Stephen Ellis, University of  Birmingham, School of Chemical Engineering and through conversations about the challenges of improving heat transfer inside tubes.

What followed was a remarkably hands-on approach to research and development.

In the early days, resources were limited. Martin rented a tiny space known as the “old fire master’s house” and built his experimental equipment from whatever materials he could find.

Flow measurements were made with a bucket and a stopwatch. Pressure was measured using a mercury manometer, while temperatures were taken with glass thermometers.

It was a world away from the sophisticated research facilities available today, but the fundamental approach was the same:

Measure. Understand. Test. Improve.

Those early experiments generated data that Martin was determined to take into industry, beginning a journey that would ultimately see CALGAVIN’s technologies developed and applied around the world.

Breaking through the barriers

One of the most revealing parts of Martin’s acceptance speech was his description of the challenge of introducing something genuinely new into an established industry.

He recalled taking his early results to major organisations and receiving an encouraging response. The technology was interesting. The results were promising.

But there was a problem.

Nobody wanted to be the first.

Martin described the experience as spending decades “knocking down castles” built in front of you because nobody wants to take that first step.

It is a challenge familiar to anyone trying to introduce new technology: convincing an industry to move from “that looks interesting” to “let’s actually use it.”

Martin’s persistence ultimately helped turn that challenge into opportunity and has been central to CALGAVIN’s development.

Today, CALGAVIN provides heat transfer enhancement products and services including hiTRAN® tube-side enhancement systems, thermal design, performance analysis, de-bottleneck studies, new product development and testing.

The company continues to combine practical industrial requirements with fundamental and applied research, helping customers solve complex heat transfer challenges across a wide range of applications.

Connecting industry and academia

Although Martin did not set out on an academic career, his work has made a significant contribution to heat transfer research and knowledge.

Collaboration has always been at the heart of his approach: bringing together universities, researchers, students and industry to tackle practical engineering challenges.

Over his career, Martin has authored and co-authored papers in thermal processing, developed and managed multiple research projects, served as Chairman of the Heat Transfer Society and held the position of Board Director at Heat Transfer Research Inc. (HTRI).

He has also created, chaired and contributed to major international conferences and technical events, helping to share knowledge and strengthen connections across the global heat transfer community.

His approach has always been about more than developing technology. It has been about sharing knowledge, encouraging collaboration and finding practical solutions to difficult engineering problems.

Building a legacy for the future

Perhaps the most significant part of Martin’s speech was that he did not focus solely on what has been achieved, but on what comes next.

CALGAVIN has continued to invest heavily in research and development, most recently through the creation of the Centre for Flow Processing, providing a dedicated environment for research, testing and collaboration with universities and industry.

For Martin, creating this facility was something of a gamble. But it was a gamble driven by a belief that investing in research would create opportunities for new collaboration, new funding and new innovation.

When reflecting on his legacy, this is the part Martin identified as potentially the most important:

“If there’s a piece of legacy from what I’ve been trying to do, it’s probably that part.”

That sentiment perhaps says more about Martin than any list of achievements could.

His career has never simply been about developing a product or solving one engineering problem. It has been about creating knowledge, challenging accepted thinking, working with others and creating opportunities for the next generation of engineers and researchers.

A fitting recognition

There was also an almost poetic moment surrounding Martin receiving news of the award.

Earlier this year, while driving through New Zealand’s geothermal region, Martin stopped to read the message telling him about the award. Shortly afterwards, he came across a large road sign bearing the words:

“Thermal Explorer Highway.”

Martin joked that it felt almost as though someone had put the sign there to tell him which way to go.

It was, perhaps, a remarkably appropriate moment.

For more than four decades, Martin has followed that path, from improvised experiments in a tiny workshop to internationally recognised heat transfer research and engineering solutions.

His journey has been driven by curiosity, persistence and a willingness to challenge conventional thinking. Along the way, he has built a company, developed technology, supported research, worked with universities and industry, and helped advance the wider heat transfer community.

The UKHTC Lifetime Contribution Award is a fitting recognition of that contribution.
